Wave 4 exclusive: Windows Live Events shutting down

Windows Live EventsWindows Live Events is a Windows Live service enabling users in Windows Live Spaces to share and plan different types of Events happening around them while collaborating with other services such as Windows Live Calendar and Windows Live Spaces. In 2010, Windows Live Events is going to retire, and existing data will be removed. This is the first of a series of decisions to be made according to one of the core principles for Windows Live Wave 4, the next version of the Live services, stating: “Simplify!” The Windows Live team announces:

We’ll be retiring Windows Live Events and allow you instead to plan and manage social events all in one place through Windows Live Calendar. […] In 2010, we’ll retire Windows Live Events entirely. 1. The user interface of Calendar compared to Events is just not up to par, though.

I’ve just created a calendar and then tried to create an event in the calendar. The browser (IE8) just sat there saying “Saving”. I eventually closed the browser, reopened the calendar and found the event there! However, I cannot edit it. Nothing happens.

Also, Events have discussions and a guest list. That functionality just vanishes with the loss of that service.

Very disappointed. I’ll have to see if there is another Event service out there now. Calendar just isn’t going to be a good enough replacement.
