Back in May 2010, the Windows Live team published an update for Windows Live Essentials 2009 (Wave 3). It introduced stability fixes as well as a simplification of the webcam feature. Back then, the discussion about this changed feature was immense.

Until now, this Wave 3 update (build number 14.0.8117) was optional. This is going to change soon: The update will be forced on all users of Windows Live Essentials 2009. Piero Sierra, the Group Program Manager for Windows Live, announced:

This Messenger update simplifies how you start a video call from within Messenger pre-2011. Rather than individually managing your and your friend’s webcam feeds and audio, you can now start a video call just by clicking the “Video” button in the conversation window or by clicking the webcam icon. Also, you can more easily make video calls to your friends who do not have webcams, controlling the audio for both you and your friend by clicking the speaker and microphone icons.

This minor update is going live within the next week and rolls out in 48 languages. It does not force you to install Windows Live Essentials 2011 however.

The first changes due to Messenger 2011 are introduced in Messenger 2009 now as well, as we noticed: The webcam feature is only usable on both sides.

The first changes due to Messenger 2011 are introduced in Messenger 2009 now as well, as we noticed:

The webcam feature is only usable on both sides. The feature “Show my Webcam” is no longer available. If you now click the webcam icon next to your display picture, a Video Call will start directly. If the recent Messenger 2009 update (Build 8117) has not been installed yet, pending single-side webcam invitations will be rejected automatically server-side.

But I’m wondering: I haven’t installed nor received any update for Messenger yet, and still… will features of the new Messenger come to my PC silently this way?

Update: I’ve tested the Video Call feature and am thrilled about its picture quality. Though, one problem remains: you only can “cam” with one person at once. I assume this is something we have to get used to.

There seems to be some confusion on the update to the webcam feature. When you want to send or view webcam in the recently upgraded Messenger version, you will launch a video call. This is a changed behavior, and people are quite confused about it.

Since a few days, I have the newest Windows Live version, Build 14.0.8117.416. Since I have this version, I cannot start simple webcam transmissions anymore… only video call works. Is that how it works in the new version?? If yes, that’s a really stupid change! Or is the problem located on my end??

Questions like this keep increasing since an intermediate update for Windows Live Messenger 2009 has been published recently. What is it all about? When you want to send or view webcam in this upgraded version, you will launch a video call. This is a changed behavior, and people are quite confused about it.

Piero Sierra, Group Program Manager for Shared Data Experience, has posted the in-depth explanation why these changes to Messenger’s webcam functionality have been made:

There seems to be some confusion on the update to the webcam feature. Let me clarify that one-way video conversations are still very much supported. It is still absolutely possible to “share your video” with a relative abroad who does not have a video camera. Or see someone else’s webcam when you do not have one. Let me explain how you do this: Let’s say you do not have a video camera, and are chatting with a friend who does. In the chat window, click “Video” (or click the webcam icon next to your friend’s user tile). This will set up a one-way video call. You can then mute or unmute your audio by clicking the microphone. You can control your friend’s audio by clicking the speaker icon. Simple as that, and you still have the control. The inverse is also supported (where you have a webcam, and your friend does not).

Some background on what has changed:

In the past, we offered two choices to start a video conversation with someone. You could either click “Video Call” or select “Show my webcam.” Video Call is the full-featured option that includes two-way video and audio. It is how most people expect video calling to work. Show my webcam was a one-way feature, where you could show your webcam’s video to your friend, without audio. This caused a lot of confusion, and our data showed users would often click “Show my webcam”, only to be surprised they didn’t have audio, and couldn’t see their friend. They would then attempt to turn these on separately. Furthermore, the two features used a different video code-path which made switching between these scenarios hard, and also made it hard for the team to make quality & performance improvements to the scenario as a whole. In our latest update, we have simplified the command to just “Start Video Call”… If you have a webcam, but your friend does not, they will be able to see you and hear you, and you’ll be able hear them if they have a microphone. If you do not want to hear your friend, or do not want to share your audio, you can simply toggle the microphone icon next to your picture or the speaker icon next to your friend‘s picture. There are only really two aspects that are different: (1) it is no longer easy to hide your webcam’s feed if you have one enabled when you start a video call (you can still do this using the AV settings dialog). (2) You can no longer set up “webcam rings” with multiple people sharing silent video one-way. There are valid reasons to enable both of these scenarios, but their usage was very infrequent, and made both the user experience and the code overly complicated. This is why we have chosen to move forward with a simpler option. Please look for a post soon about our expanded video capabilities in Wave 4.

With these — amazingly explanatory, by the way! — thoughts in mind, can you now understand why webcam is working differently in Messenger from now on?

With Windows Live Messenger 2011, webcam conversations are going to change. Up to now, you could view your contact’s webcam or let others view it, without launching a full video call. This is going to change soon.

In Messenger 2011 (Wave 4), you will start a video call whenever you choose to view or send webcam. Furthermore, the compression codec used to compress webcam data has been changed. Users with a slow web connection will notice worse quality. As preparation for the new Messenger, an update for Messenger 2009 has recently been released (Wave 3 Build 14.0.8117).

Wave 4 aims to go forward. Does Messenger go forward with these changes, or is it rather a step backwards? What do you think?

Finally, sign in to Messenger and launch the Audio Video wizard from the Tools menu. Webcam should now work!

Clicca Visualizza certficitati.

Cliccca Aggiungi ai contatti.

Windows Live Movie Maker: non installato con Windows Live Essentials
Movie Maker richiede Windows Vista o Windows 7.

Scrivi: CD %programfiles%Common FilesAheadDSfilter e poi premi Invio.

a. Per cancellare, scrivi: regsvr32 NDParser.ax /u e premi Invio.
b. Per ri-registrare, scrivi: regsvr32 NDParser.ax e premi Invio.

Movie Maker supporta solo font TrueType

Clicca Disinstalla/Cambia.

Click Ripara, e poi clicca Continua.

“The procedure entry point IsThreadDesktopComposited could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll”

Angus Logan: Guter Versuch .

mynetx: Live Mesh – was war dein erster Eindruck davon?

Angus Logan: Gern geschehen!

This evening, C.N., a friend, told me about a problem with USB devices on Windows XP (SP3). Whenever she wanted to connect a device with one of the USB ports, she could not use it—whether it was her mouse, her webcam or her digital camera. She couldn’t even access her external hard drive, as it did not show up in “My Computer”.

When I told her to open device manager with Start, Run…, devmgmt.msc, she stated that “Unknown devices” were listed there, with yellow exclamation marks. I was wondering where to get their drivers, even asked for the original CDs in hopes to grab the needed drivers from there. However, there was one thing I learned tonight: Simply let Windows do the search. My friend right-clicked the unknown device and chose “Update driver…”; then she clicked “Install software automatically”. And voilà: the driver was found—something I would never have expected, as normally the system would have detected the devices automatically.

Surprisingly, this worked even for new devices. When a camera was plugged in, the drive didn’t show up instantly, only an Unknown device. Only when my friend used device manager to install the drivers (without having to browse for the driver file manually; automatic discovery was sufficient), everything worked. Nearly. Because—auto-play doesn’t work; that is, the Scanner and Camera Wizard does not open automatically on plug-in, although the settings in the device properties (“AutoPlay” tab) are correct.

Summary

Plug & Play does not work. (The “Plug & Play” system service is “Started” and “Automatically”.)

Manual driver setup with automatic search does work.

AutoPlay does not work.

Any tips appreciated…

You have a webcam, connect it to your computer, but Messenger doesn’t recognize it? There are several tips you might try out.

Restart Messenger. The camera might appear now.

Doesn’t work? Restart Windows, having the webcam plugged in (if external).

Is the cable connected correctly?

Look in “My Computer” (Windows XP) or “Computer” (Windows Vista). Does your camera appear there? Messenger might have a problem with your camera. Contact the Windows Live team, including information about your webcam model.

Press Win+R. Type “devmgmt.msc”, and look in the appearing “Device Manager”. Your camera is not listed there? Your computer might have problems with either the USB Host Controller or the webcam driver itself.

Did you recently upgrade Windows? You might need a new driver version. Check your manufacturer’s website for new drivers, using the exact name and model of your webcam. If there is no recent driver—that’s bad.

Still no luck? If you are using Windows XP: Open Internet Explorer, and navigate to Microsoft Update. Check for “Custom search”, and look if there are any driver upgrades available from the “Hardware” section. If you are using Windows Vista: Use the Windows Update applet in the Control Panel.

It doesn’t work yet? Hmm, *scratches his head*.
Maybe one of you guys got an idea. Feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks to C.N. for the idea to this post!

Today I’m presenting you someone with a special relation to Windows Live. I had the privilege to talk with Frank Mänz, Product Manager of the Windows Live Online Services Group in Germany about his personal experiences and opinion regarding Windows Live.

mynetx: Nice that you are taking some time to talk with me about “Windows Live and You” despite your packed schedule…

For a start, it would be good if you could introduce yourself and your connection to Windows Live.

Frank Mänz: At work, I use Windows Live as a Product Manager, while at home, I use it for communicating with my friends and family. You could say my life revolves around Windows Live.

mynetx: How long has it been since you started working with Windows Live? Tell me a bit about your history.

Frank Mänz: Since forever—my beginning with Windows Live was when the first Microsoft Messenger was launched 10 years ago; to be honest, I don’t know if it were called MSN Messenger at that time; then MSN Communities and MSN Chat. Just as Microsoft introduced “Windows Live” as a brand, I watched it as an outsider while working on the competition.

mynetx: Competition?

Frank Mänz: WEB.de / GMX for 1.5 years—

mynetx: And how was United Internet for you, compared to Microsoft?

Frank Mänz: It was an interesting experience.

However, Microsoft offers an essentially more interesting perspective with Windows Live, its products, and its services—for a Product Manager and, of course, for the users.

mynetx: How did you become responsible for the German market as a Product Manager for Windows Live Services?

Frank Mänz: I was asked if I wanted to do that.

mynetx: Sounds like a dream come true—?

Frank Mänz: That is a sure thing! Back then, that is, about two years ago, I was excited about Windows Live even as an “outer.” As new products were announced, the services were becoming used growingly. You want to be part of that. Just what has changed in Hotmail over the last two years is … great!

mynetx: That’s true—much has changed.

Frank Mänz: …and it’s to be continued!

mynetx: Let’s talk a bit about your personal habits. Messenger is running permanently, isn’t it? Maybe you’ve got some sort of a personal routine with Windows Live?

Frank Mänz: Yep, starting Messenger, checking e-mails; moreover, Messenger is running more or less constantly due to my work.

At home, I use Messenger very directly. Subsequently, I am not “available” lastingly as my computer only runs when I really need it, Wireless is merely switched on also when needed.

Now, I am always posting videos of my little daughter in SkyDrive. Some members of the family are currently in France and Canada and SkyDrive is an easy way of keeping them up-to-date.

mynetx:

What is your favorite feature in Messenger?

Frank Mänz: That depends: Chatting with everyone, viewing photos with my parents, sending nudges and emoticons to irritate my brother, view webcam with friends; but essentially Messenger is for chatting.

mynetx: And which is the function you like most in the other Windows Live services/programs?

Frank Mänz: My favorite feature, and that’s new for all users, is “POP aggregation”, meaning to “Send and receive mail from other e-mail accounts” in Hotmail. Now I can check my WEB.de and GMX account online in Hotmail—everything is in one place in Hotmail with unlimited storage. I find it great, so I set that up for all my friends who have problems with their 13 MB Freemail storage.

Another great thing is the address merger in Hotmail. Here, contacts’ data are compared and appear similar once merged.

Furthermore, I find the “full-screen” Diashow in Windows Live Photos to be great > it is fun to present your photos online this way.

mynetx: Got to check that out as well!

Frank Mänz: The next great thing is that I can link several Windows Live accounts with each other. That is, you can sign in with account A and switch directly to account B, by just clicking on your name or icon top-right in Hotmail or Photos and then click “Link with other accounts”.

mynetx: Yes, linking is a good solution that I myself use as well.

Frank Mänz: It is fantastic that I also can use Windows Live on my own domain. Just check out domains.live.com, it is not that easy but it works.

mynetx: Since Google Apps can only manage up to 50 users for free, Windows Live Admin Center has become more interesting…

Frank Mänz: Yes, I can create 500 accounts on my own domain for free, all with unlimited e-mail storage etc.

Photo Gallery > Panorama Photos: I find that great too. Furthermore, I like the beta products very much: e.g. Live Mesh, or DeepZoomPix or Photosynth. You have to check them out in any case—they are fun!

mynetx: Live Mesh was Microsoft’s pioneer and the first visible result of the “Web 3.0”, so to say, Cloud Computing… is this the future technique?

Frank Mänz: You could say so; I do not like “Web 3.0” and such phrases very much. I think that such words do not mean anything to millions of users. The focus must be on the usage and not on the catchphrases.

mynetx: That’s right.

If Messenger is so present in your daily life, maybe you have a tip that not everybody knows about?

Frank Mänz: Yes, because it is fresh: You can now invite contacts from other “networks,” like Facebook, to Messenger. In Messenger, click on the icon “Add contact or group,” right next to the search box, and then choose “Add people from other services.” —Or just try it out at http://profile.live.com/connect/?partner=Messenger .

mynetx: Tell me about a function you fail to spot most in Messenger.

Frank Mänz: Travel using Messenger > Send myself through Messenger…

mynetx: How could that work?

Frank Mänz: See! Messenger has what it should have—some details, just for new users, are missing—e.g. import features for contacts from other networks, but we are working on it right now.

And what is next to come: Choose my own sign-in sound. That is, how it sounds for my contacts when I sign in.

mynetx: Was that not part of the first Messenger 9 beta?

Frank Mänz: Yes.

mynetx: Do you know why it has been removed?

Frank Mänz: Application complexity—the team needed more time.

mynetx: “And what is going to come then”, you say—are the Signature sign-in sounds coming back?

Frank Mänz: I hope so…

mynetx: According to your personal opinion, what will the Windows Live Team be adding to Wave 4, the next version of the Windows Live suite?

Frank Mänz: In any case, the sharing and sync scenario, which is still being offered in different products now, is going to be combined. Starting applications directly from the Web (cloud computing) as well as performance and new features will play a role.

mynetx: Sounds interesting… do we have to wait long before a new beta arrives? It’s very silent at the moment.

Frank Mänz: Sit back, relax and enjoy summer, sunshine and vacations.

mynetx: And finally: Which Live-related projects are you working on currently?

Frank Mänz: New version of the Messenger Online Treff, and an integration of Messenger in MSN.

mynetx: We are looking forward to that! Thank you for taking so much time talking with me.

Frank Mänz: You’re welcome, and I thank you as well.

Da will man dabei sein.

Facebook in Messenger einladen.

Frank Mänz: I hope so…
