Trackbacks are used primarily to facilitate communication between blogs; if a blogger writes a new entry commenting on, or referring to, an entry found at another blog, and both blogging tools support the TrackBack protocol, then the commenting blogger can notify the other blog with a “TrackBack ping”; the receiving blog will typically display summaries of, and links to, all the commenting entries below the original entry. This allows for conversations spanning several blogs that readers can easily follow.

This is the Wikipedia definition of trackbacks. Windows Live Spaces supports receiving trackbacks for blog posts, and so I am sending them when I publish a post about one of the entries e.g. in the Windows Live Wire blog. However, I noticed that the trackbacks are not always properly received in Spaces; I am experiencing this is a permanent issue and trackbacks are only now and then received.

Have a look at these two screenshots I took, comparing the WordPress admin dashboard with the originating post at Windows Live Spaces.

Compare essas duas screenshots do Windows Live Movie Maker, e do Live Writer atual:

Remember the good old times when Windows 98 was so cool? These were the times of MSN Messenger 6, a stone-age program nowadays. Some months ago, in February, I had the chance to check it out, and I decided to share it with you. What is interesting is that you could see your contacts’ display pictures right in the contact list. So, let’s dive into old memories… (By the way, for the ones among you wondering: Yes, Messenger Plus! existed even back then. )

Foram escolhidos o WLMSafe, Screenshot Sender, Gmail Checker, WLMStatus e Twittwer2PSM. De-a sua opinião também nos comentários!

Oi! Este é meu primeiro post aqui no mynetx – Evolução do Windows Live.

5) WLM Safe: o primeiro script antivírus, antispam, antiflood, antiroubo and anti-phishing para o Windows Live Messenger!

WLM Safe é o primeiro script no mundo a prevenir esses ataques.

WLM Safe é o primeiro script antivírus para o Windows Live Messenger. Proteja seu Messenger contra vírus, pishing, spam, flood, congelamento, cópia, bots and hackers.

3) GMail Checker: novo email?

Nowadays, displays offer a rich variety of colors, mostly 32-bit, allowing a multitude of 4,294,967,296 different colors—more than 4 billion! Graphic artists tend to use more and more of these possibilities. Messenger is one of them, especially in version 2009, also known as Wave 3. But if you have a display that allows only 256 colors (8 bit)? Let’s have a try.

Hrm, nice. You can actually recognize the icon! Let’s sign in.

(Click the images to enlarge them.)

What is that?! You see the normal design, but very many magenta pixels are spread in all dark user interface parts. In the sign-in window, that is not a problem, but looking at the contact list header, you cannot actually read your personal status message properly nor distinguish the toolbar icons. Highlighted items in the contact list are also very hard to read (see “Favorites” in the screenshot).

What about the system notification area? There, the icon is rendered quite fine, and the icon is good enough for you to see your status.

Let’s ask Lonn for his opinion. Lonn is a Senior Product Manager in the Messenger team.

(Click the image to enlarge it.)

Compared with the sign-in window and the contact list, this window is much better to read. I would consider the conversation window to be the only one truly accessible with 8-bit (256) colors. Due to a special resource just for 256 colors, emoticons are also very good to recognize. But look yourself:

(Click the image to enlarge it.)

Summarizing this little experiment, I can say that Windows Live Messenger 2009 is not optimized for low color depths. Most of it is usable, some parts are very hard to read, and some are quite fine. Messenger does not contain any special resources for 256 colors, except for emoticons. Are the 8-bit times really over?

He lives in Shanghai, China; many of you will probably know him as “Picturepan2” while his real name is Yan Zhu (??).

mynetx: Sorry to steal your night, I find it good that you have some minutes nevertheless.

Picturepan2: No problem, haha.

mynetx: So, try describing yourself and your connection to Windows Live, in one sentence.

Picturepan2: I am Picturepan2, self-proclaimed Microsoft fanboy, from LiveSino.net where I blog about Windows Live and other Microsoft stuff.

mynetx: Fan-boy you say. There aren’t many such people in China, true?

Picturepan2: Yes, true.

mynetx: And how come you became a Windows Liver? Since when are you in the business? Tell me a bit about your story.

Picturepan2: I was a normal Windows Live user (or tester) since November 2005, when Windows Live was first announced. In summer 2006, I accidentally found a fatal bug which I could use to get any Windows Live Spaces users’ Windows Live IDs without tools or permissions. After that I contacted Kip at LiveSide and kept watching Windows Live until now.

By the way, I am also the LiveSide representative for China and this is why I started blogging at LiveSino.

mynetx: Ah, quite interesting.

Picturepan2: I didnt even know what Windows Live was when I found that bug.

mynetx: You’re using Windows Live Messenger since you got to know it?

Picturepan2: I think the answer is Yes. The first Windows Live Messenger I used looked cute and much more different than what it looks today.

mynetx: What version was that?

Picturepan2: Windows Live Messenger 8.0 Beta 1 in 2005 Dec.; http://livesino.net/archives/321.live.

mynetx: Do you think Messenger has improved from back in version 8.0 until today, 14.0?

Picturepan2: Hmmm. You can hardly say it has improved a lot, but I have to say some parts have.

mynetx: Like?

Picturepan2: Such as What’s New integration, user interface…

mynetx: Hmm. And what do you like most in Windows Live at all? Apart from Messenger, that is.

Picturepan2: What’s New! Actually there are some others.

mynetx: So, pick one.

Picturepan2: Windows Live ID infrastructure enables user login and using all Microsoft offerings.

mynetx: The unified login makes sign-in at Microsoft, wherever you are, easy. Right?

Picturepan2: Yes.

mynetx: What is the thing you’d love most to be added to Messenger?

Picturepan2: A Plugin platform. As you know, Messenger Plus!’s plugin platform is awesome.

I wish Windows Live Messenger could learn something from Messenger Plus!…

mynetx: Do you think the Windows Live Team is going to add support for a plugin platform in Wave 4?

Picturepan2: I don’t think so. There is still no strong reason for them to do that. lol

mynetx: So, what about your usage of Windows Live. Is Messenger always open and signed in? Maybe you’ve got kind of a daily routine with Windows Live.

Picturepan2: Yes, almost always. But I don’t use Windows Live Messenger when i am REALLY busy.

mynetx: When you’re using Messenger intensively, maybe you have a tip that not everybody knows about?

Picturepan2: I always use PhotoShare feature to show screenshots, though it is not clear enough.

To start using it, just press Print Scrn button then Ctrl+V when back to conversation window.

mynetx: Are you working on any project at the moment which is related to Windows Live?

Picturepan2: no, I am currently only blog about Windows Live and other Microsoft offerings at LiveSino.

mynetx: Any plans for LiveSino’s future?

Picturepan2: Of course, LiveSino will cover more stuff from Microsoft and other companies related to Windows Live.

mynetx: And I will be watching LiveSino for interesting news on Windows Live. Thanks for your time.

Picturepan2: You’re welcome.

When I saw the first screenshots of the Web Bar, part of the new Windows Live Messenger Web Toolkit, I was amazed. Not amazed by the features it has, not by its look, but amazed by its similarity with the Facebook Chat bar. Look yourself:

Let us have a look at the similarities in detail.

Facebook Chat bar and Messenger Web Bar – some similarities

We see the main icon, giving access to all your personal details, in the right bottom corner.

Inside the window opening when you click that icon, you can change your status message.

You can also decide whether to come online or to appear offline, or even set a more detailed status like Busy or Away.

On the left of the main icon, you have the contact counter. Clicking it will show your contact list.

Again, on the left, there is space for conversation buttons. When a new message arrives, a new tab opens or an existing starts to flash.

Each conversation tab has the contact’s display picture as well as their name and status next to it.

More similarities include:

The Chat bar is positioned at the bottom of the browser window and stays at its position, regardless where you scroll.

The Chat status stays the same and you stay signed in, even when you click a link to a different page within the same website.

Is it just pure coincidence?

Are the similarities just a pure coincidence, or was it wise planning and inspiration?
Did the Windows Live team just steal the whole chat bar idea from Facebook?

Looking at the design of the Windows Live Messenger logo and sign-in window, it hasn’t changed very much since Windows Live Messenger 8.1 or so. However, we can look forward to Wave 3 integration and simplification also in this area. The new logo will look something between these 3 shots/mock-ups:

Here is what the sign-in window of the future Windows Live Messenger 2009 Final is likely to look like:

<img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="Windows Live Messenger 2009 Final Sign-in window?

 What do we see?

There is a new Windows Live Messenger icon in the top-left of the window.

The Windows Live Wave 3 Header is now present.

The help button has been moved and redesigned.

The text boxes have been moved down and made room for a “Welcome back!”.

The closed Sign-in state dropdown has the corresponding icon on its left.

The Info links have been shortened to just Privacy statement and Server status.

More info to come as soon as I can get my hands on it. Stay tuned…

Fresh out of the oven and still pretty hot: Messenger Plus! on WLM 2009. Soon to be released as a public beta, here you can have a peek at what Plus! will look like when hooked into the recent Windows Live Messenger 2009 Wave 3 beta.

Contact List

In the header area of your contact list, on the left side of the e-mail icon, but on the right side of a (mostly hidden) offline message icon, you find a big Plus! icon. It opens the same menu that was opened by the smaller Plus! icon in former versions of Messenger.

Under it, next to the Add contact dropdown, there is the scripts button, opening the scripts menu (if you have any scripts installed).

Chat Window
