While you are abroad, maybe on a holiday trip, it is especially important to keep safe with your Windows Live ID. You might communicate through insecure wireless networks, or from computers with outdated security settings. Data thieves are anywhere. Protecting your Live ID is essential, as it is your access key to Messenger, Hotmail and all other Windows Live services.

Even when you forgot your password, there are ways to get access to your account back. In order to be able to make full use of these ways, please concentrate on setting up additional personal information. This will help the support team to make sure that it is really you who wants to get access to your account.

You should know the following information regarding your account:

Alternate e-mail addressIn your profile, you should add an alternate e-mail address. In case you forget your password, you can have a password reset link sent to this address.

Secret question and answerYou can have Windows Live ask you a question whose answer can only be given by you. When you want to have your password reset, you have to enter this answer. You can view and change your secret question.

Watch out: This answer is as important as your password! Never tell anybody about it!

Personal folders at HotmailIn your Hotmail inbox, create some personal folders with unique, uncommon names. Later you can tell the support their names for identification purposes.

Mobile numberYou may also enter your mobile number, and make use of this number to access your account and prove your ownership at the Windows Live support. Same rule applies: Do not publish your mobile number on the web!

A summary of your Windows Live account is available as well.

Today is the international Safer Internet Day 2010, promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones. This year’s topic: “Think B4 U post!”. Its creator Insafe explains:

Young people do not always realize that the personal information they post remains online and it can be accessed by anyone (including their parents, teachers, future employers, predators…). Many employers now check their job candidates online. Personal information contained in social networking profiles can be used by unscrupulous individuals for purposes which may include grooming.

Ten tips for your safety

The following ten tips, issued by the German Federal Office for Security in the Information Technology (BSI), should help you to use social networks wisely:

Be reluctant with publishing personal information!

Inform yourself about the Terms of Use and the Privacy Terms of the social network you’re using!

Don’t confirm every friendship request—criminals “collect” friends to harm people!

Report “cyber-stalkers,” contacting you permanently via the social network!

For every Web application, use a different and secure password, especially if you are registered with multiple social networks!

Don’t spread internal information about your employer or your work!

Critically check which rights you give the operators of social networks, regarding photos, texts and information uploaded by you!

If you receive “doubtful” requests from friends, check out the trustworthiness of the request via other media.

Don’t click on links by random—social networks are increasingly used to conduct phishing!

Talk with your children about their activities in social networks and inform them of the dangers!

Especially the last item is not always easy to accomplish, as the children’s media competence is often higher than the parents’.

I am really excited about that as all these markets are in EMEA: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, India, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Spanish is the first of currently 4 user-translated languages that are about to get added to Twitter. You can now switch the Twitter website to Spanish. And please check your OAuth permissions for unwanted applications. We show how.

Spanish is the first of currently 4 languages that are about to get added to Twitter. All of these translations are completely user-based, that is, they were created by chosen people who can talk the target languages fluently. You can now switch the Twitter website to Spanish. Here is how.

¿Qué estás haciendo?

Open http://twitter.com/ in your favorite browser.

Sign in or create a free account.

On the top navigation, click Settings.

Scroll down to Language, and choose Spanish – español.

Click Save.

Some thoughts on compromised accounts

If you recently had to change your Twitter password because somebody had unauthorized access to it (e.g. you tried a third-party service that resulted in being a spammer service), you should know that you are not in complete control over your account yet. Why? The key to this security problem lies in OAuth. OAuth is the authorization system that allows third-party services access to your account without needing to know your password. So, in theory, the service you have tried might have authorized a bad service of their own using OAuth. Then, even after you changed your password, this service still has access to your account.

While Yahoo offers to revoke granted permissions when resetting your password, Twitter currently does not. Until Twitter adds this feature, you should always look through the list of applications have access to your account via OAuth, after you changed your password. To do this, follow these steps:

Open http://twitter.com/.

Sign in with your Twitter account and password.

On the top menu, click Settings.

Switch to the Connections tab.

Go through the list and revoke access for any application that you do not know or trust.

Now you should be on the safe side.

When it’s all about your own computer, things are normally not that important. But when you are abroad, for example using the Web on your friend’s computer or in a public school or library, you should be concerned about the security and privacy of your data. Especially when you want or have to sign in to your Windows Live (or even any other) site and thus enter credentials into a browser, you should minimize the chance that somebody else can take over your session after you leave.

InPrivate, Private Browsing, Incognito

Almost all modern browsers help you to protect your identity abroad: They have private modes integrated that are easy to enable and that don’t store any browsing history nor cookies on the computer after you close your session.

Open your favorite browser, or the one that you are using on the foreign computer.

Enable the private mode, as described below.

Surf.

Close the browser window when you are done. This is important!

Your cookies and session data are then deleted, including your Windows Live ID login information, if you have signed in to Windows Live in your private browsing session.
No fear anymore!

Here is how to enable the private mode in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari:

Internet Explorer

Click Safety, InPrivate Browsing.

Mozilla Firefox

Click Tools, Start Private Browsing.

Google Chrome

Click Tools, New incognito window.

Apple Safari

Click Tools, Private surfing.

Riconoscimento posta indesiderata

Clicca Visualizza certficitati.

Cliccca Aggiungi ai contatti.

Windows Live Movie Maker: non installato con Windows Live Essentials
Movie Maker richiede Windows Vista o Windows 7.

Scrivi: CD %programfiles%Common FilesAheadDSfilter e poi premi Invio.

a. Per cancellare, scrivi: regsvr32 NDParser.ax /u e premi Invio.
b. Per ri-registrare, scrivi: regsvr32 NDParser.ax e premi Invio.

Movie Maker supporta solo font TrueType

Clicca Disinstalla/Cambia.

Click Ripara, e poi clicca Continua.

“The procedure entry point IsThreadDesktopComposited could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll”

Just in case you wonder about the announced release of the Windows Live Essentials (that is, the programs for your PC, like Live Mail, Live Messenger, Live Photo Gallery, Live Movie Maker, Live Writer, Live Toolbar and Live Family Safety) – they had been planned to ship Friday noon Redmond time (late evening in Europe). However, there is currently a delay in shipment because the Team is working extra hours to fix bugs that were encountered in the private RCs of the past days. It has been reported to me that there are new builds nearly every day now internally, and we can still expect the Essentials RCs to be released to the public as soon as possible. I will be updating this post when I get to know more details. (If you wonder about Messenger Plus! compatibility with the upcoming Messenger 2009 RC, I can only tell you that Patchou is/will be working on it and has a version to check out on his disk.)

Just to make it clear: we’re talking about the client software programs, not the web services already rolling out at this very moment. According to an e-mail that MSN Direct watch people, including Messenger Geek Jonathan Kay, received today, the “release to market date” for these client products is February 10, 2009 (the mail is accidentally talking about “2008” which is obviously a typo).

We can thus look forward to some 4 months of beta testing the Wave 3 client programs (namely, Messenger, Mail, Toolbar, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Family Safety and Outlook Connector) and to report any bugs we find, before their final is being released to the public.
